Mamore Update -Cameron Loudon, Head Stalker

Another challenging hind season finished successfully with a settled spell of weather. Much of the season was focused in Protection areas of the Ben Nevis SAC/oak/pine woods and the Leven Valley SSSI.

Along with Glenshero and Killiechonate, one last butchery session over two days last week helped further stock the shop.

This week starts with various projects such as a collaboration with the Nevis Landscape Partnership to replace a bridge at Achintee, as well as assisting the British Dragonfly Society with peat surveys for their planned butterfly habitat improvement works at Loch Eilde Mor. The team are working with BDS to re-establish wet pools at Mamore, ideally suited for the larvae of many increasingly rare, red listed species of dragonfly, darter damsel fly. Many of these species are known to breed at the sites in Kinlochleven, and we are working hard to ensure their successful survival due to the risk of many wetland areas drying out due to climate change.

The main projects to be completed in Spring on Mamore Estate include checking and maintaining woodland enclosures, path and hill road maintenance and Rhododendron. (invasive and destructive species)

Incredible views over Mamore Woodland Enclosure & an incredible bench Cameron made for the Loch Leven viewpoint.
